7 Luxury Skincare Devices That Work Better Than a Facial
I’ve had a lifelong obsession with luxury skincare since my mom snuck me into the spa at the Claremont Resort at 13 years old to calm my hormonal acne. I don’t get facials often now, because they’ve become so cost-prohibitive – $300 for 60 minutes? In this economy? – and because I’m lucky enough in this career to receive some kickass sample products.
As indulgent and relaxing as facials are, you’re not going to see impactful results unless you get them regularly. You’re much better off skipping the spa day and spending your cash on an at-home treatment that you can use multiple times to target your individual issues. Forking over hundreds of dollars for a device sucks but you’ll be so grateful in a few months when you start to see those wrinkles smooth out!
Best Multi-Use: TheraFace PRO ($420)
Therabody really ate with this product. (I’m watching a lot of Love Island, did I use that right?) It comes with five attachments, three of which I use regularly. I start with the cleansing ring, which reminds me of a cleaner Clarisonic scrubber. It’s silicone, so it’s much easier to disinfect. After my face is washed, I toss on the LED light therapy ring for some targeted red light therapy (there’s also blue and purple), followed by the microcurrent ring. It’s the easiest mini-facial and doing it twice a week has truly improved my skin’s appearance.
For Dermaplaning: DermaFlash Luxe+ ($199)
Look, I don’t want to be the lady who shaves her face, but I can’t stop. Having a face void of peach fuzz is too addictive! Using the DermaFlash Luxe+ makes my skin glow, helps skincare penetrate deeper and more quickly, and allows the foundation I wear twice a year for weddings to glide on super smoothly. The only downside is that the razors are single-use, so you’ll have to stock up.
For Exfoliation: Microderm Pro by PMD Beauty ($199)
Skin looking a little dull? Exfoliate! I’m gonna caveat this by saying my skin might be too old for the Microderm Pro. I used one throughout my late 20s and loved the way it exfoliated the dead cells off my face, but my 37-year-old skin is more sensitive now. I recently tried one and found it a little irritating, but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone with young, elastic skin.
For Laser Hair Removal: Epilaser ($995)
I went on a Groupon bender in my early 20s and bounced between laser therapy spas to shape my bikini line. It was an amazing time and my only regret is that I didn’t do it more, because boy do I hate shaving my underarms. Yes, the Epilaser is expensive. But a lifetime of razors and shaving cream? More expensive. I’ve been using this for six weeks and I can already feel my underarm hair getting weaker, less powerful. It only takes a couple minutes after the shower and I truly think I might be completely hairless (legs and all) in six months.
Best Hands-Free: Qure Mask ($379)
These masks scare me, but my sister-in-law wanted one for Christmas and honestly, I liked the idea that it might spook her husband. (He remains unruffled.) She’s been using it for six months and not only has she noticed an overall improvement on her skin, people have commented on it over FaceTime. It’s easier than a handheld device and comes with four different light options.
For Wrinkles: NIRA Pro+ Laser ($649)
I’m not anti-Botox, but I am anti-Botox for me. I don’t like the idea of injectables, but lasers? Hell yeah. I’ve been using the NIRA Pro+ around my eyes for two months and maybe it’s the placebo effect, but they really do seem more youthful looking. The Pro+ is even more powerful than the regular Pro, which suits me because I will turn any device up to 11. (Side note: Can we ban all the “plus” “pro” “luxe” stuff any make companies come up with better names? I’d buy The Wrinkle Destroyer.) I’m going to target my neck next – I’ll keep you updated.
For Blackheads: DermaPore+ ($109)
Love pore strips but heard they’re not great for you? I know, my 14-year-old self is weeping, too. Instead, invest in a DERMAPORE+ and watch the gunk pile up. I’ve used this on my nose a number of times and even convinced my husband to let me scrape it across his face. It’s super satisfying and way less harsh on your skin that the strips. A word to the wise: USE THE PREP MIST. This product will zap the f*ck out of your face without it.
